Microneedling is a specialized, minimally-invasive skin treatment. It’s performed as a means to improve the overall texture and tone of the skin. Most commonly performed on the facial skin, the treatment can help minimize the appearance of scars and other blemishes, fine wrinkles, and dark spots. Its effectiveness is due to the creation of capillaries and an increase in the amount of collagen and elastin in the skin.

We highly recommend this treatment to our clients who bring us concerns about age-related skin texture problems. Those who are experiencing slight skin sagging caused by improper skin hydration and a decrease in skin firmness can also benefit from microneedling. If you’re not sure what this treatment involves, the following information may be helpful.

Creating Channel Wounds

At first, it sounds a bit strange to purposely create wounds in the skin in order to improve its condition. However, when the skin is properly stimulated, the body will respond by discarding damaged tissue in favor of new growth. After all, that’s how wounds heal in the first place.

The micro-channels quickly fill with blood, lymphatic fluid, liquid scar tissue, and nutrients. Soon afterward, granular tissue builds up, and this eventually becomes more specialized tissue, the same tissue as the adjacent material. Because it’s brand new, it’s very healthy.

A series of microneedling treatments, spaced apart by a few weeks of healing, can transform the entire face. The skin is supple and firm, and most discolorations such as age spots, acne scars, and freckles, are far less noticeable.

Typical Treatment

We can treat the entire face in about 30 minutes. After a couple of weeks, we will repeat the treatment, but chances are that most of the needles will penetrate areas that were adjacent to the tissue affected during the first treatment. Thus, after about four or five treatments, the entire skin surface has been affected.

Collagen remodeling occurs by the time the final treatment is completed. The amount of collagen and elastin continues to increase for several more months. This is why microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy. Additional capillaries form as well, and this helps to keep the skin surface evenly toned and properly nourished. The results of microneedling can last for up to a year or more.
